This Buddhist bracelet carries the Tibetan mantra Om Mani Padme Hum, hand-carved into black obsidian beads. Each bead is carved by hand, so the depth and spacing of the syllables vary slightly from piece to piece.
Buddhist Bracelet – Meaning
A Buddhist bracelet is worn as a daily reminder of the Buddha’s teaching rather than as a religious requirement — each glance at the wrist recalls the intention to act with compassion and patience. In this design, that meaning is literal: the full mantra is carved bead by bead.
The Royal Buddhist Mantra – Om Mani Padme Hum
Om Mani Padme Hum is the most famous mantra in Tibetan Buddhism, sometimes called the Royal Mantra or the Mantra of Life Energy. A mantra, broadly speaking, is a word or sound believed to carry special spiritual power, often repeated to express and strengthen a particular belief. Its meaning is said to run deeper than any single phrase or sentence could capture.
Om (or Aum) is the primordial sound of all creation. It’s said to help dissolve the ego and cultivate kindness and generosity.
Mani dissolves jealousy and attachment to fleeting pleasures, helping us cultivate patience with ourselves and others.
Padme dissolves our attachment to prejudice and judgment, helping us cultivate perseverance, while also easing possessiveness and strengthening our powers of concentration.
Hum dissolves attachment to aggression and hatred, helping us cultivate our own innate wisdom.
Obsidian
Obsidian is a natural glass, formed when hot lava cools rapidly on the Earth’s surface. People have used it since the Stone Age, when hunters shaped its sharp fragments into weapon tips. The ancient Aztecs also valued this stone highly, calling it the “God’s Stone” — their sacred dagger, used in ritual offerings to the gods, was made from obsidian. Black onyx, black tourmaline, and black obsidian are all considered traditional protective stones because of their dark colour.
