Russian Jade (Nephrite) – Meaning
“Jade” is really a name for two different gemstones — nephrite and jadeite — which look similar and share many properties, but nephrite, like this Russian stone, is the tougher and historically more widespread of the two, prized for centuries in China, Russia, and beyond, while jadeite is the rarer, often brighter-green variety mostly associated with fine Burmese jewellery. The name “jade” comes from the Greek word “nephros,” meaning “kidney,” from an old belief in its benefit to that organ.
Green nephrite is considered a powerful stone, said to help release negative thoughts. In ancient China, jade was carved into treasured amulets and statues — the dragon statues that adorned the Chinese emperor’s palace being among the most famous.
