Amber is the fossilized resin of prehistoric trees, found in various places around the world. Its colour and structure vary depending on the type of tree it came from and where that tree grew. Around 25–40 million years ago, conditions in northern Europe were ideal for rapid tree growth, and the heat and humidity caused trees to produce large amounts of resin — often as a response to injury to the trunk or branches. Over time, and through repeated cycles of rain, this resin gradually transformed into the amber we know today.
These natural inclusions can increase the value of a piece — the rarer the trapped fragment, the more sought-after the specimen.
People have used amber to make jewellery since the Stone Age, and over thousands of years it has been known by many names: Tears of the Gods, Petrified Honey, or Solid Sunlight.
