Blood Amber – Meaning

Amber is the fossilized resin of prehistoric trees, found in various places around the world. Its colour and structure vary depending on the type of tree it came from and where that tree grew. Around 25–40 million years ago, conditions in northern Europe were ideal for rapid tree growth, and the heat and humidity caused trees to produce large amounts of resin — often as a response to injury to the trunk or branches. Over time, and through repeated cycles of rain, this resin gradually transformed into the amber we know today.

Genuine amber often contains tiny natural inclusions — sometimes even prehistoric insects trapped in the resin. These inclusions can increase the value of a piece and are prized by collectors for their rarity.

People have used amber to make jewellery since the Stone Age, and over thousands of years it has been known by many names: Gold of the North, Tears of the Gods, Petrified Honey, or Solid Sunlight. Baltic amber appears in Viking legend, where it was carried as a protective amulet, believed to be the petrified tears of Freya, the Norse goddess of beauty and love.
