Iolite – meaning
This precious stone is associated with Viking navigators, who acc. to legend used it as a compass for orientation at sea. When there was a situation where the sun could not be seen from behind a thick layer of clouds, the Vikings were lost at sea. Without the position of the sun, they could not determine their location and the next direction of the voyage. But that changed Iolite gemstone, a natural mineral that can respond very strongly to sunlight and change color when the sun’s rays impact on its surface. So the Vikings had to lift the crystal above their heads and circle with it in the cloudy sky. In the moment when the crystal light up, they knew exactly where the sun is.
Legends says that Leif Eriksson and other Viking explorers ventured far from the coast to the Atlantic Ocean, only with their secret weapon: the iolite crystal. Thanks to this gemstone, they were able to determine the exact location of the sun and thus safely reach the American continent and find their way back. In the past some people called iolit ‘water sapphire’ because at a certain angle it can actually resemble the precious sapphire gemstone.
The dark purple shade of iolite directly resonates with the energy of dusk and is ideal for dreamers and visionaries. It is the perfect stone for leaders that need to stimulate their imagination. It helps them to find the right way across life and promote original ideas by strengthening their intuition. It is also used as a protective stone for pilgrims and travellers to find their way back home. It is also nicknamed as the stone of the inner treasure, because it is supposedly able to unlock their hidden potential in humans, about which they have no clue yet.
