Amethyst – Meaning

Amethyst is the calm at the centre of a busy mind. For centuries this violet quartz has been credited with quieting racing thoughts, keeping you level under pressure and holding a little space between you and the noise of the day. Left raw, as it is here, the crystal keeps the exact shape it grew into underground — a small natural sculpture resting at your collarbone, with all of the stone’s meaning and none of the polish.

Its royal reputation is well earned. Until vast deposits were discovered in Latin America, amethyst was scarce enough to rank among the most treasured of gemstones: it was set into coronation jewels, and in the Middle Ages kings and bishops wore it as a symbol of majesty and clear judgement. To wear that deep purple is to borrow a colour that once belonged almost entirely to thrones.

The older stories reach further still. Ancient Egyptians carried amethyst into battle to steady their courage. Leonardo da Vinci believed the stone could control negative thoughts, strengthen intelligence, speed up thinking and tilt business negotiations towards a good outcome — which may be history’s oldest endorsement of a decision-maker’s stone. And the Hebrew word for amethyst, “aklamah”, is the very word for “dream” — a nod to the vivid dreams and quiet visions amethyst is said to inspire.

It is also counted a stone of prosperity, mental purity and honest friendship — warmth as much as clarity. That suits a woman who carries a great deal in her head: decisions, people, plans. Worn on its slender chain, the raw crystal sits lightly through the whole day and asks only one thing in return — a slow breath now and then, a clear thought, and the nerve to stay true to yourself.
