Rhodochrosite – Meaning

Rhodochrosite takes its name from the Greek “rhodos” and “khros” — pink and colour — and few stones wear a name so literally. Bands of rose and cream run through every bead in soft, layered stripes, each stone carrying its own pattern, and the grading follows the colour: the more even and deeply pink the banding, the finer the stone. It is this layering that separates rhodochrosite at a glance from plainer, cheaper pink stones.

Its heartland is Argentina, home to the world’s largest natural deposits and proud enough of the gem to count it a national stone. It is also where its most haunting legend lives. There it is called “Rosa del Inca”, the Inca rose: the Inca held these banded pink stones to be the blood of their ancestors turned to stone, which made the gem not simply beautiful but sacred — memory and love given lasting form.

Its best-known title, the Stone of Unconditional Love, makes it sound purely romantic — yet its deeper work is said to begin closer to home.
