La rodocrosite prende il nome dal greco "rhodos" e "khros" – rosa e colore – e poche pietre portano un nome così letterale. Fasce di rosa e crema attraversano ogni perla in morbide striature sovrapposte, ognuna con il proprio disegno, e la classificazione segue il colore: più le striature sono uniformi e di un rosa intenso, più pregiata è la pietra.
