Larimar – Meaning

Most gemstones are scattered generously across the planet; larimar keeps to a single island. The Dominican Republic is its only source anywhere on Earth, and the stone stayed hidden there until 1916 — a late arrival in the long story of gems, which is partly why it still feels like a secret.

Even the name is an island story. Its discoverer formed it from Larissa, his daughter’s name, joined to “mar”, the Spanish word for the sea — Lari-mar, a beloved child and the ocean in one word. It would be hard to invent a truer label for a stone whose blues seem to move like water.

Grading follows the depth of colour. The gentler stones show a soft, milky blue, while the rarer, more intense turquoise pieces are prized as the finer grade — beads that look as though a patch of open ocean had been sealed inside them.

Its nicknames reach straight for myth. Some know it as the Dolphin Stone, others as the Stone of Atlantis — after a legend that today’s Dominican Republic once belonged to that lost civilisation, and that this blue stone carried healing power for its people. True or not, the story captures how larimar feels to wear: like something surfaced from an older, calmer world.

Its believed work is inward. Larimar is said to settle turbulent emotions and to draw the attention gently beneath the surface, which has made it a treasured meditation stone, bringing deep stillness to long, quiet sittings. It suits anyone who steadies themselves by water — the sea-dreamer living far from any coast, the meditator, the one who wants to carry a little Caribbean calm on the wrist through an ordinary working day.
