Emerald – Meaning
Deep green emerald is known as the “Jewel of Kings,” and is the most valuable variety of the beryl family — the same gem family as blue aquamarine and peach-coloured morganite. Along with ruby and sapphire, emerald forms the “Great Trio” of precious stones, among the rarest and most treasured coloured gems on Earth. Its name comes from the ancient Greek word for green, “smaragdus,” and as the traditional May birthstone, it makes a meaningful gift tied to renewal and new beginnings.
Emerald is said to bring physical and mental balance, and harmony to every part of life. Many civilisations have considered it a stone of prophets, believed to bring wisdom, sharpen intuition, and support the search for truth. The Egyptians saw emerald as a symbol of eternal life, a gift from Thoth, the god of wisdom, and Cleopatra reportedly adorned herself and her palace with it. Emerald is said to inspire unconditional love and is often called the “Stone of Successful Love,” believed to help keep a partnership in balance — a bridge between two people.
