Nephrite – Meaning
Green nephrite (green jade) is considered a powerful healing stone, said to help release negative thoughts. Worn as a talisman for centuries throughout Asia, it has become one of the most trusted protective stones in the region. The name “jade” comes from the Greek word “nephros,” meaning “kidney” — it was once believed to have a beneficial effect on this organ.
In Asia, jade and jadeite have long been honoured as noble stones, in part because the two look so similar and share many properties. In ancient China, jade was so valued for its medicinal use that a strict law made destroying an object made from it punishable by death. The Chinese believed jade could ward off illness, making it central to traditional healing practices. Jade was also carved into amulets and statues — the dragon statues that adorned the Chinese emperor’s palace being among the most famous.
