Deep green emerald is known as the “Jewel of Kings,” and is the most valuable variety of the beryl family — the same gem family as blue aquamarine and peach-coloured morganite. Along with ruby and sapphire, emerald forms the “Great Trio” of precious stones, among the rarest and most treasured coloured gems on Earth. Its name comes from the ancient Greek word for green, “smaragdus.”
