Lapis-lazuli – Signification

The name is a small history in itself: “lapis,” the Latin word for stone, joined to the Persian “lazhward” — blue. The blue stone. Lapis lazuli is one of the oldest gemstones known to humankind, and few have been credited with so much: it is said to sharpen the mind, steady the judgement and shield its wearer from negativity, gently clearing away heavy, lingering energy and restoring inner balance.

Nowhere was it loved more than in ancient Egypt. The Egyptians saw the night sky in its deep blue and the eternal stars in its golden flecks, and named it the “Stone of Heaven.” They carved it into amulets, ground it into some of the first cosmetics made for women, and set it into the burial mask of Tutankhamun himself. Most telling of all, Egyptian judges are said to have worn lapis engraved with a single word: truth.
