Lapis Lazuli – Meaning
The name comes from a combination of the Latin word “lapis,” meaning stone, and the Persian word “lazhward,” meaning blue. Lapis lazuli is one of the oldest gemstones known to humankind. In ancient Egypt, it was used to make jewellery, amulets, and even some of the first cosmetics for women. The Egyptians associated it with many positive qualities, but above all called it the “Stone of Heaven” — its deep blue colour said to symbolize the night sky, and its white and gold flecks the eternal stars.
Egyptian judges reportedly wore lapis lazuli around their necks, engraved with the word “truth,” and it also adorns the burial mask of one of history’s most famous pharaohs, Tutankhamun. Lapis lazuli is a powerful cleansing stone, valued for clearing heavy energy and restoring inner balance. Spiritually, it’s used as a protective stone against negative energy.
