Emerald – Meaning
Deep green emerald is known as the “Jewel of Kings,” and is the most valuable variety of the beryl family — the same mineral family as blue aquamarine and peach-colored morganite. Along with ruby and sapphire, emerald forms the “Great Trio” of precious stones, among the rarest and most treasured colored gems on Earth. Its name comes from the ancient Greek word for green, “smaragdus.”
Emerald is said to bring physical and mental balance, and harmony to every part of life. Many civilizations have considered it a stone of prophets, believed to bring wisdom, sharpen intuition, and support the search for truth, while also calming a troubled mind. The Egyptians saw emerald as a symbol of eternal life, a gift from Thoth, the god of wisdom. Cleopatra reportedly adorned herself and her palace with emeralds, and gave them as gifts to foreign diplomats to display her power and wealth.
Emerald is said to inspire unconditional love and is often called the “Stone of Successful Love.” It’s believed to help keep a partnership in balance, symbolizing a bridge between two people. According to legend, emerald can even reveal infidelity by changing color.
