Few gemstones have served seafarers as faithfully as aquamarine. Its name comes from the Latin “aqua marinus” — sea water — after a colour like pale foam on a wave, and for the sailors of the ancient Mediterranean it was standard equipment: an amulet trusted to grant a calm voyage and a safe return home. Merchants prized it along their trade routes for safe passage and honest dealings, and legend reached further still — the stones were said to be the fossilized tears of mermaids, and to lose none of their power anywhere near the sea.

On land its reputation turned towards love. In the Middle Ages, aquamarine was used to rekindle passion between married couples and became a customary wedding-anniversary gift — a stone for keeping long love clear rather than letting it silt up. It has graced grander settings too: an aquamarine is set into the St. Wenceslas Crown among the Czech Crown Jewels.

Running through all these traditions is a single idea: clarity. Aquamarine is considered a cleansing stone that encourages trust and honesty, and it is tied to the throat, the body’s centre of expression. It is believed to ease the fear of speaking and to help its wearer find words that are true and kind at the same time, even when the moment is tense. The composure a sailor needed to keep a clear head in a storm is, tradition says, the same composure the stone lends to everyday weather: the apology, the boundary, the honest answer.
