This gemstone gets its name from patterns that resemble flowers, actually formed by fossilized corals and shells. Its proper name is “agatized coral,” or “agatized fossil coral.” It formed through a natural process in which ancient dead coral settled on the seabed in silicon-rich water, gradually being replaced by agate, chalcedony, or microcrystalline quartz over more than 20 million years. Because of this, fossil coral should never be confused with living coral from today’s endangered reefs — fossil coral is also much heavier and harder than living coral. These beads appear in various colors, most often white, pink, brown, gray, or beige, and many retain remarkably lifelike patterns from their original living form, now preserved in stone.
