Dzi — pronounced “zee” — is the Tibetan word for a patterned bead, most often made of agate. In Tibet these beads have never been simple decoration: for generation after generation they have served as working talismans, worn in the belief that they turn aside accident and ill health while quietly drawing prosperity towards their keeper. A dzi was less an ornament than a piece of equipment for living.
